    This paper starts from the simple interrogation of what sort of contributions can be given for the research of Korean social history by studying Confucian classics. The study of Confucian classics (1) has a decisive importance for the understanding of Confucian ‘cultural complexes,’ (2) can be a crucial foundation for developing the sociology of knowledge in the context of Confucian societies, and (3) is an indispensable basis for the application and refinement of hermeneutical, semiological, sociolinguistic ideas, and analysis of instruments in the veins of Confucian societies.
