종교와 청소년 정신건강

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 종교와 정신건강 사이의 상관관계에 대해 기존에 이루어진 연구결과들을 재검토하고 그 상관관계를 설명할 수 있는 이론적 준거틀을 제시함으로써 종교 자원의 활용이 청소년 정신건강 증진에 기여할 수 있는 대안을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 종교와 정신건강 간의 상관관계에 대한 기존 연구 결과의 혼재는 종교가 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 설명할 수 있는 이론적 체계에 대한 실증적 검증이 부족한 것에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있겠다. 따라서 본 연구는 스트레스 대처 이론과 사회적 지지 이론을 기반으로 청소년에게 있어서 종교와 정신건강 사이의 상관관계를 설명하였다. 또한 청소년에 대한 접근성과 정신건강 증진을 위한 효과성을 고려할 때, 종교 자원, 특히 교회 자원의 활용에 대한 사회복지 차원의 관심이 요구된다. 따라서 교회와 종교 단체들을 활용한 청소년의 정신건강 증진과 문제행동 감소를 위한 대안 모색이 요구되어진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Despite the significant role of religion in adolescents’lives, a relatively small amount of research has examined the associations between religiosity and mental health in adolescence. Findings from many studies supported the positive effects of religion on mental health. However, a few studies revealed that religion would be potentially harmful to a certain population. These inconsistent findings from previous studies would be due to the lack of theoretical models to analyze the associations between religiosity and mental health. This study suggests that conceptual models based on stress coping theory and social support theory would provide a plausible explanation on the inconsistent findings from previous studies. In addition, the current study suggests how religious institutions including church can utilize their resources in a way to improve mental health outcomes of adolescents.
