거주지 분리와 교육에 대한 사례연구: 성남시 수정구 어머니들의 경험과 인식 = A case study of spatial differentiation of residential area and education: Perception and experience of mothers in Soojeong-Gu, Seong-Nam

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper discusses the relationship between spacial differentiation of residential areas by social class and educational difference. To realize this aim, we employ a qualitative case study focusing on lower class mothers who live in Sujeong-Gu, Seongnam city. These mothers do not have much concern about their children's “studying”, rather about their social and emotional development. They see residents in Bundang-gu, a middle class residential area, as others who are different from them or who are narrow minded elites to exclude others. Some Sujeong parents, especially who have higher achieved children, want their children to attend higher quality of schools in Bundang. At the same time, they worry about that their children might have poor grades and lose confidence after moving in Bundang. Unlike these parents, many Sujeong parents criticize that Bundang parents so strongly push their children to study that their children feel lots of stress and frustration. They perceive a good school as one that children are happy rather than as one that they receive lots of study stress.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 계층에 의한 거주지 분리와 이웃효과가 자녀 교육에 미치는 영향을 탐구했다. 이를 위해서 성남시 수정구지역 중3 학생 어머니들을 대상으로 질적 사례연구를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 수정구는 경제적으로 열악한 가구가 많지만, 동일한 방식이 아닌 자신들의 삶의 여정과 조건에 따라서 자녀 교육에 달리 대응했다. 성적 좋은 자녀를 둔 학부모들은 자녀들이 수정구 학생들과 다른 길을 가는 사람들로 인식하고, 더 나은 교육여건을 가진 분당으로 이주하고 싶어 하면서도 적응실패의 두려움을 보였다. 그 외 다수 학부모들은 “공부”보다는 사회성이나 정서발달에 더 관심을 보였다. 이들은 힘들 때 서로 돕는 이웃들을 좋은 사람들 그리고 수정구를 “사람냄새가 나는” 곳으로 인식하였다. 반면, 인접한 중산층 분당주민들을 자신과는 다른 사람들 또는 자신들을 배척하는 “지도층”으로 생각했고, 이들의 과도한 자녀 통제와 교육투자에 비판적이었다. 이러한 교육관과 양육과정은 계층 재생산의 가능성과 교육에 대한 보편적 통찰력을 갖는 이중적 의미를 갖는다.
