The Quai Branly Museum, built in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, opened to great fanfare in 2006. As the latest case of French presidential ‘grand travaux’, inaugurated during Jacques Chirac’s final months in office, this museum, dedicated to the arts and civilizations of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, has triggered discussion in a broad interdiciplinary context. After brief contexualization of this discussion, I argue that the Quai Branly Museum could be seen as a cultural institution incarnating the new ‘mission civilisatrice’ of postcolonial age, geared toward symbolical assimilation of the immigrants into ‘one and indivisible’ French national culture.
