The purpose of the study was 1) to identify caregiving stress of family caregivers for elderly with dementia, 2) to examine coping behaviors of caregivers dealing with demetia symptoms and caregiving stress, and 3) to examine whether the coping behaviors reduce the cognitive problem behaviors of dementia elderly and caregiving stress of family caregivers. The subjects consisted of 40 caregivers who cared for dementia eldery in home. Survey and interview were performed to understand coping behaviors that used under caregiving situations. The important findings of the study were as follows. First, the caregivers used emotional-focused coping(57.5%), problem-focused coping(30.0%), nonconsistant coping(12.5%). Second, caregivers perceived that problem-focused coping was more effective strategies dealing with dementia symptom of the elderly. But caregivers who used problem-focused coping experienced higher caregiving burden than used emotional-focused coping or nonconsistant coping. The results of the study suggested that it was important to consider not caregivers but also the demented elderly in order to promote effectiveness of the family caregiving.
