The purpose of this study was to examine consciousness of the middle school teachers' on their in-service training and their awareness of the in- service training system and its operation in an effort to provide useful information for the improvement of in-service training. The subjects of this study were 341 middle school teachers in the region of Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, on whom a survey was conducted.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, most of the teachers investigated experienced in-service training over the last two years at their own expense or with financial aid. The teachers went through in-service training in teaching-learning the most, and they viewed this training as most useful.
Second, the middle school teachers took a favorable view on the operation of the current in-service training system involving the types of training, financial aid for training cost, opportunity of getting free training with financial assistance, and evaluation.
Third, many took a stand against personnel administration that reflected in-service training experiences in terms of transfer or promotion. So the sorts of climate that encourages teachers to take training courses voluntarily at their own request should be created instead of forcing them to get unnecessary training.
Fourth, the majority of the teachers had ever experienced distance training, and they felt that distance training was similar to offline training in terms of effectiveness and evaluation impartiality. A combination of offline and online training was considered most effective, and they expected to take appropriate training courses at the right time.
