아르프 작품의 이념적 분석 = An Analytic study on Arp’s works

German-French sculptor, painter and poet, Jean Arp(also called Hans Arp) was born in Alsace and studied at the Strasbourg School of Arts and Crafts, at Weimar and the Academie Julian, Paris. Arp exhibited his first abstracts and paper cutouts in Zurich in 1915 and began making shallow wooden reliefs and compositions of string nailed to campus. In 1916 he was a founded member of Dada in Zurich. In Paris, Arp began to evolve his personal style of abstract compositions through an organic morphology, frequently sensuous in form, and began to experiment with automatic composition.Gradually Arp's work moved into a more solemn and romantic phase, related to the simplicity and the biomorphic forms.In 1925, he participated in the first Surrealist exhibition in Paris, before breaking with Surrealism to become a founder member of Abstraction-Creation in 1931, when his characteristic organic forms became more severe and geometrical. At a time when he began to turn towards full 3-D sculptures, Arp insisted that his sculpture was concrete rather than abstract, since it occupied space, and that art was a natural generation of form: a fruit that grows in man. Arp's hatred toward inhumane and immoral acts reflect his postmodernism. Jean Arp's biomorphic works seem to have international reputation for a long time.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

독일-프랑스 조각가이자 화가 그리고 시인이기도 했던 아르프는 알자스에서 태어났으며 스트라스보그 아트학교와 파리의 줄리안 학교에서 수학했다.아르프는 성장과 변화의 정신은 자연의 유기적인 형태로 느낄 수 있어야만 하며, 인간과 융화되어야 한다고 믿었다. 이것이 바로 아르프 작품의 외형적인 형태상 특성으로서, 생명체의 형태로부터 유래된 형체들은 표면의 매끄러움에서 나오는 긴장감과 미세한 생물체의 운동을 보듯이 끊임없이 살아 움직이는 비정형적인 유동성을 보여준다. 그것은 사물이 갖는 특수성이나 우연성에서 벗어나지 않고 오히려 자연형태의 불규칙함과 부정형을 그대로 보여줌으로서 유기적 요소를 창출해내는 것이다.아르프 작품의 속성을 이루는 독특한 측면은 생물학적 외형이나 생명현상을 응축하고 암시하는 형태(biomorphic shape)라고 할 수 있다. 여러 비평가들이 아르프의 조각들에 대해 생물 현상적 혹은 생물형태주의라는 용어를 사용했는데 이것은 현대미술에서 유기체적인 자연과의 유사성을 표현하는 미술사조의 한 경향을 지칭한 것이다. 아르프는 이러한 생물형상적인 추상작품의 개발에 선구적인 역할을 했는데, 그의 유기적인 형상은 다다이즘과 초현실주의 시절 제작된 지상의 형태들(Fromes Terrestre)연작에서 최초로 나타났다. 아르프가 특정한 개인적 목적이나 사회의식에 기반하여 의도적인 작품을 제작한다거나 하지 않고 개인의 자유와 자연스러운 의식의 흐름에 큰 비중을 둬 작품제작을 했으며, 특히, 반인류적이며 비도덕적인 사회적 행위에 거부감을 강하게 표현한 점들은 현대 포스트모더니즘적인 요소와 일맥상통한다고 할 수 있다.
