Area productivity for moving a person varies considerably with modes of transport used. In the city with a multi-mode transport system, the amount of land required for transport facilities then varies greatly with the relative proportion of trips carried by different modes. This paper evaluates the area productivity as a function of model split. It first discusses the concept of area consumed by a travel, followed by evaluation and comparison of area productivity of different modes of transport. It then discuss and evaluate the relationship between area productivity and modal split, by deriving an equation that expresses the area productivity as a function of modal split. Finally, to clarify the relationship between area productivity and modal split a numerical example with a three-mode system is utilized. The results of this paper will help understand some of fundamental causes of transportation problems in out cities and suggest solutions to cope with the problems.
