The Depression of adolescent is rapidly increasing in the last few years. But a study on depression tendency of adolescent is lacking relatively. So, this study was done to estimate depression tendency and its related factors of a middle school students.
For the study, a middle school in Jeon-ju were selected and conducted to 590 middle school students from March 22 to April 1, 2010. 534 out of the total 540 respondents with sincerity were finally chosen for the analysis. The instruments used in this study were the Self-administered questionnaire, the Zung SDS (for measuring depression), the Social support Scale, and the Self-esteem Scale. Data were analyzed through Chi-square rest, Fisher's Exact Test, T-test, and logistic regression using SPSS 11.0.
The results were as follows.
First, analysis showed that depression tendency of a middle school students in Jeon-ju was 17.2% in total, 12.5% among male students, 21.6% among female students. Female students had a higher depression tendency than male students.
Second, there were statistically associations between the depression tendency and gender, school record, religion, perceived health status, perceived body satisfaction, perceived stress, perceived fatigue, family life satisfaction, school life satisfaction, thought of suicide, attempted suicide, perceived social support and self-esteem.
Third, the logistic analysis showed that risk factors of depression tendency were sex(2.25 of odds ratio), perceived fatigue(15.14 of odds ratio), and thought of suicide(4.88 of odds ratio).
Adolescent depression is not just an individual problem, but related to home and school environment. Therefore a unified personal, family, social efforts are required.
The results of this study will be used basic data to establish prevention and management for depression tendency of adolescent.
