This article sheds light on Mr. Gubo’s sense of self-awareness as an exile and resistance to reality from a new perspective by analyzing the aspects of intertextuality of The Divine Comedy in A Day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist (1970-1972). Mr. Gubo, a favorite reader of The Divine Comedy, finds and reads the short story of Balzac, where Dante is the main character, and finally becomes Dante in his dream and creates his own The Divine Comedy. This paper analyzes this process as a process in which an intertextual reader of The Divine Comedy becomes an intertextual writer.
As an exile, Mr. Gubo rejects Dante’s redemption history, a traditional and mainstream interpretation of The Divine Comedy, reinterprets The Divine Comedy around the life of Dante, forming a sense of familiarity for Dante. When Mr. Gubo conducts a secular criticism of The Divine Comedy, The Divine Comedy becomes a secular text that reveals human life including Dante and European society in the 14th century rather than a religious text. Mr. Gubo reads Balzac’s short story “The Exile,” and in his view, Balzac focuses on Dante’s life and world as an exile. By analyzing this intensive description, this article argues that “The Exile” reveals dynamic intertextuality with The Divine Comedy. This article also shows that this dynamic intertextuality is revealed in the creation of The Divine Comedy by Mr. Gubo, who became Dante in a dream. In his dream, Mr. Gubo returns to society and the world surrounding the creation of The Divine Comedy, where he projects the political reality of the 1970s and the ruling system of the Korean Peninsula to The Divine Comedy and Dante. Mr. Gubo, who carries out secular criticism of The Divine Comedy and Dante’s life, creates his own The Divine Comedy. Mr. Gubo’s resistance to reality is revealed in his insistence that the keyword that runs through The Divine Comedy is revolution. At this time, the intertextuality between Mr. Gubo’s The Divine Comedy and Dante’s The Divine Comedy is revealed implicitly rather than explicitly. By highlighting Mr. Gubo as a new creator of The Divine Comedy, this study understands that Mr. Gubo has the status of an intertextual writer by dynamically projecting his existence as an exile onto Dante of The Divine Comedy and the life of Dante the original author.
