This study aims at finding out the differences that three, four, five year-old children's counting will result in, in terms of material type and order of presentation. The method of this study is scoring the result of observation for counting using pictures and concrete materials in form of individual interviews. The subjects are 177 children in S, Y kindergartens located in Songpa-Gu, Seoul.
This study showed two meaningful results. First, they didn't show significant statistic differences in counting by two kinds of material type, pictures and concrete materials. And when the same kind of pictures and different kinds of pictures were given, they didn't show significant difference in counting. But according to their age they showed significant differences and the older they were, the higher their scores were.
Secondly, in counting by order of presentation they showed significant difference; three, four year-old children got the highest scores in counting by materials given in order (from 1 to 10) and the lower scores in reverse order (from 10 to 1), and the lowest scores in random order. Five year-old children showed the highest scores in reverse order (from 10 to 1) and the lower scores in order (from 1 to 10), and the lowest scores in random order.
