Trauma, the Marginal Self, and the Politics of Mourning

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 정치적, 사회 분석적 틀로서 정신적 외상경험이 갖는 함의를 고찰하기 위해, 지금까지 흔히 일시적 충격이나 극심한 고통만을 의미해왔던 단발성 위주의 외상의 개념정의에서 탈피하여, 이를 지속적 억압과 소외가 초래하는 존재론적, 정신적 폐해를 포함하는 좀 더 폭넓은 관점에서 조명해보고, 외상연구가 내포하는 자아와 타자간의 새로운 관계설정이라는 윤리적 함의를 타진해보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 외상에 관한 프로이드의 저작이나 그 이후의 여러 연구가 공통적으로 시사하는 바는 외상적 경험으로 인한 자아 및 사회적 상징적 질서의 파열이며, 특히 소외된 계층에 대한 최근의 외상연구는 이러한 파열된 상징질서의 간극과 균열을 통해 드러나는, 무수한 타자들의 희생에 의해 옹립, 유지되는 기존 사회의 억압적 구조를 비판한다. 기존 상징질서가 양산해내는 소외 계층의 외상적 자아는 크리스테바가 “abjection”의 개념으로 설명하듯 지배 계층이 억압적 담론으로 구조화해낸 왜곡된 그들 자신 이미지의 투사체일 뿐이다. 그리고 이를 영속화하여 외상적 주체가 주변적 자아로서 고착되도록 하며 또한 사회질서 유지와 보존을 위해 끊임없이 이들의 종속과 고통을 다스리고 승화하며 구조화하는 것이 지배담론의 자기중심적 “애도”의 정치학이다.
외상적 경험을 특징짓는 반복과 상징적 서술행위의 부재는 상징 질서로부터의 주변적 자아의 소외와 그에 의한 대상화를 역설적으로 나타내주는 증후이며, 이에 대한 사회 및 정신분석적 연구과 담론화 작업은 타인의 소외와 억압에 기초한 지배적 상징질서를 비판, 전복할 수 있는 가능성을 시사한다. 그러나 외상적 경험에 대한 극복을 위한 과거에 대한 비판적 반추와 재현 행위는 단순한 강박적 반복과 달리, 음험하게 반복되어 나타나는 억압의 증후를 서술, 담론화 하고, 그리함으로써 외상적 경험과 기억에서 결여되었던 사회성과 타자와의 결속이라는 차원을 부과한다. 동시에, 외상적 경험에 대한 서술화 작업은 억압적 과거로부터의 비판적 거리를 확보함과 더불어, 단지 소외된 타자로서 존재했던 외상적 경험의 자아로 하여금 자신을 경험적 주체로 인식할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다. 그리고 타자의 억압과 그로 인한 외상적 경험에 대한 의식적 재현을 다루는 외상연구는 타자를 자신의 인식론적 틀로 수렴하지 않고 그들 간의 환원할 수 없는 이질성에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 한 상호 공감과 소통 방식의 가능성을 모색, 타진함으로써 타자와 자아간의 새로운 윤리적 관계 설정에 기여한다.
