정치ㆍ죽음ㆍ진실 = 1991년 5월 투쟁을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

많은 국가에서 민주화 이후 요구되는 중요한 과제가 이른바 ‘과거청산’이다. 군부독재라는 어두운 ‘과거’가 저지른 죄악은 가장 근본적으로 인간 생명의 경시와 부정, 곧 ‘죽음’과 맞닿아 있다. 따라서 ‘과거청산’의 핵심은 이러한 인간의 죽음을 둘러싼 ‘진실’을 밝히고 그에 상응하는 ‘정의’를 실현하는 것과 직결되어 있다. 1991년 5월 투쟁은 4월 26일 백골단에 의한 명지대생 ‘강경대의 타살’, 전남대생 ‘박승회의 분신’, ‘김기설의 자살과 유서대필 논쟁’ 및 ‘정원식 총리서리 봉변사건과 이에 대한 언론의 과장 보도’를 통해 점화ㆍ확산ㆍ소진되면서 과거청산과 관련된 문제의식의 핵심을 강렬하게 보여준다. 따라서 이 글은 ‘정치ㆍ죽음ㆍ진실’이라는 주제를 먼저 1991년 5월 투쟁의 핵심적인 네 사건을 중심으로 분석하고자 한다. 이어서 5월투쟁이 제기하고 있는 정치철학적인 문제를 ‘권력과 진실’, ‘인륜ㆍ패륜 공방’, ‘유폐된 진실과 거부된 정의’로 나누어 조명하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the most important tasks facing newly democratized countries is that of coping with the legacies of the previous military regimes. The most outrageous crimes they have committed are directly related to the death of innocent people, as well as the violation and belittlement of human lives. Thus, the essence of the task is to publicly reveal the truth surrounding innocent deaths and render justice accordingly. The so-called “May Struggle” in 1991, which took place under the Roh Tae-Woo government, shows the difficult and delicate problems surrounding the issue of coping with the legacies. Thus, the author seeks to analyze four key events that ignited, expanded and finally exhausted the May Struggle in terms of the three key concepts of politics, death and truth. Those four events were the death of Kang Kyung-dae who was struck to death by a riot policemen, the self-immolation of Pak Seung-hee, the government allegation of the forced suicide of Kim Ki-Sol and the forgery of his will by an outside agent who incited his suicide, and the students' allegedly violent attack upon then prime minister-designate Chung Won-sik, who visited a university campus to give his final lecture. The author, then seeks to analyze the problems of political philosophy raised by these events, focusing on such themes as “power and truth,” “proper Confucian human relationships vs. improper Confucian human relationships,” and “imprisoned truth and denied justice.”
