Grammaticalization of Spatial Nouns

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is concerned with the development of relational nouns denoting FRONT-BACK and TOP-BOTTOM axes into spatial locatives in English such as in front of, in back of, on top of, and at the bottom of. The primary sources of the proposed spatial locatives are largely those encoding relational concepts usually derived from the perspective of the human body, considered one of the fundamental parameters in establishing spatial notions since people tend to employ familiar and easily accessible entities for understanding abstract space and spatial relations (see Heine et al. 1991, Heine 1997, Svorou 1994). To describe the English prepositional system, this study intends to present various aspects of grammaticalization of spatial locatives in terms of investigating theoretical issues such as sources characteristics, frequency, conceptual division, and semantic change patterns, drawing on the statistical data from corpora.
