This study broke traditional narrative structures and, through a sequence of dreams and surrealism, non-logical images, explored the interaction between the artistry of experimental films and audience activity using the film Un Chien Andalou. The method involved collecting audience viewing evaluations of Un Chien Andalou through surveys and conducting variance analysis to categorize the artistic factors of experimental films into innovative imagery, new sensory experiences, non-narrative elements, and surrealism elements, while dividing audience agency into three dimensions: selection, involvement, and utility.
The analysis revealed that innovative imagery had the most significant impact on audience activity, greatly enhancing audience involvement. This indicates that visual innovation in experimental films can directly stimulate audience thought processes and emotional involvement. Non-narrative elements affected the audience's selection, challenging traditional viewing patterns and forcing personalized selections in the process of understanding and interpreting the film. New sensory experiences had the greatest impact on the utility dimension, suggesting that sounds and colors in experimental films can deepen sensory experiences and enable more profound cognitive and emotional reflection and application. The surrealism elements, while having a relatively minor impact on audience activity, still played an important role in audience involvement.
In summary, the innovative visual imagery, non-narrative elements, new sensory experiences, and surrealism elements in experimental films actively encouraged audiences to seek hidden themes and symbolic meanings, prompting continued research and exploration after the film had ended. Most notably, most audiences showed active thinking and interpretative activities post-viewing. Such activity was evident not only in understanding the film's content but also in interpreting its form and style. This confirmed that audience activity is not limited to the viewing process but extends to expanding the audience's imagination and exploring the relationship between the film and the real world. Thus, this study proved that the artistry of experimental films plays a significant role in enhancing audience activity, and different artistic elements impact different dimensions of activity. These findings emphasize that experimental films' artistry is crucial in enhancing audience activity, but the focus on a specific experimental film case is a limitation. Future research is expected to conduct more in-depth studies on a broader range of experimental films to explore how various artistic expressions and narrative styles affect wider audience groups. This will not only help deepen understanding of experimental films as an art form but also provide new perspectives for the creation and evaluation of experimental films, thus ensuring the diversity of experimental films.
