중국 고서 『산해경(山海经)』을 대상으로 한 시각적 재해석 연구 -일러스트 디자인을 중심으로- = A Study on the Visual Reinterpretation of the Ancient Chinese Book 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』 -Focusing on the illustration design

This study focuses on the visual reinterpretation of the Chinese classic literature 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』. The 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』 encompasses the ancient natural heritage and cultural traditions of East Asia, presented through both illustrations and text. However, over time, much of its original content has been lost. While there have been numerous literary and artistic works based on this masterpiece in modern times, they often struggle to overcome the challenge of expressing its unique essence, often becoming standardized or difficult to recreate from an international perspective. To address these challenges, this study employs a distinctive classification method to derive new expressions through reinterpretation of the 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』 From a design perspective, this project diverges from conventional approaches by not adhering to the sequential order of the text. Instead, it focuses on Eastern aesthetics under the viewpoint of cultural symbols of the Classic of Mountains and Seas』 while simultaneously extracting symbolic illustration patterns. Furthermore, rather than adopting the traditional black-and-white ink or childlike cartoon styles prevalent in previous reinterpretations of the 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』 this study aims to develop a more natural, decorative, and symbolic contemporary style. Additionally, unlike previous works primarily focusing on book design, this research endeavors to produce a wider range of practical comprehensive designs. Through these efforts, this study strives to offer a visually engaging reinterpretation of the 『Classic of Mountains and Seas』 while maintaining its cultural essence.
