      Sanyan contains many works in which the merchant appears as the main character. The merchant who appears in the work as the main character, takes on the role of a husband who divorces and later reunites with his wife whom he cheated on while he was away for business, the role of an oil peddler who collects money for the woman he loves, the role of a small business owner who works tirelessly to accumulate wealth; such as the role of a loyal servant the who accumulates wealth for his mistress.
      The purpose of this article is not to reveal how diverse the merchant figures appearing in Sanyan are, how many different items they handle, and how many different forms of commercial activity they carry out. This article does not intend to read Sanyans works as data that reveals the social conditions of the time.
      The purpose of this article is to reveal what attributes of a merchant at the time Sanyans work was best suited to realizing the authors writing intentions, if the writer of Sanyan set the occupation of the main characters in the work as a merchant. The second purpose of this article is to find out what events the character experiences when the writer of Sanyan sets a merchant as a character to realize his creative intention, and how the writer connects those events.
      To achieve these two goals, I tried to analyze these four works as main subjects, <Jiang Xingge Reencounters His Pearl Shirt>, <The Oil-Peddler Wins the Queen of Flowers>, <Shi Runze Encounters a Friend at Tanque>, and <In Righteous Wrath, Old Servant Xu Builds Up a Family Fortune>, and furthermore, I developed a discussion by demonstrating Sanyans other works extensively.
      As a result of the above discussion, I could make a tentative conclusion that Sanyans writer was much more interested in showing the human agony and conflict, good and evil deeds, loyalty and obligation, and the rewards that a merchant suffers from commercial activities, rather than paying attention to the merchants commercial activity itself. Although there are many works in which the merchant appears as the main character in Sanyan, there are few works that describe the commercial activities in detail. The merchant appearing in those works is not a person who faithfully embodies the professional attributes of a merchant, but a person who embodies the universal character that was recognized as essential to a human being in the society at the time.
      It is clear that the many works of merchant characters included in Sanyan are a sign that at that time, people began to realize that economic activities, including commerce, were the main elements of human society. However, the fact that the merchant is not portrayed as the main agent in resolving the conflicts and crises raised in the work is also a sign that the merchant has not progressed to the stage where he is recognized as the agent to solve the problems of society at that time.
