This study evaluated the hydrogeochemical characteristics, healthiness, and palatability of groundwater from 58 campgrounds across 10 cities and counties in Chungcheongnam-do Province using the K-index and O-index. The study area was divided into coastal regions (Boryeong, Seocheon, Taean, Dangjin) and inland regions (Gongju, Nonsan, Buyeo, Cheongyang, Yesan, Cheonan, Hongseong), and comparative analyses were conducted by geological zones (Gyeonggi Massif, Okcheon Belt, boundary mixed zone) to investigate spatial water quality characteristics and geological influences. The results showed that the average total hardness was 136.3 mg/L (range: 12.0–1,665.0 mg/L), with approximately 81% falling within the soft and moderately hard water categories suitable for drinking. The coastal region exhibited an average hardness of 206.8 mg/L, 2.5 times higher than the inland region (82.7 mg/L), attributed to seawater intrusion and elevated Ca and Mg concentrations. Geological zones showed systematic differences: Gyeonggi Massif (161.2 mg/L), Okcheon Belt (117.8 mg/L), and boundary mixed zone (78.8 mg/L). Piper diagram analysis revealed that Ca-HCO3 type was most dominant at 62%, and weathering of silicate and carbonate minerals was confirmed as the primary factor controlling water quality formation. The health evaluation using K-index showed an average of 19.4 (range: 4.3–43.9) across the 10 cities and counties, with 9 regions (90%) meeting the K-index≥5.2 criterion, indicating suitable mineral content for healthy water. Boryeong City exhibited the highest K-index of 43.9, demonstrating excellent health functionality. The palatability evaluation using O-index showed an average of 2.9 (range: 1.5–7.7), with 6 regions (60%) meeting the O-index≥2.0 criterion. Yesan County achieved the highest O-index of 7.7, evaluated as having the most excellent taste. Six regions (60%) satisfied both K-index and O-index criteria simultaneously. Notably, all three coastal regions (Dangjin, Taean, Boryeong) met both criteria, achieving a 100% compliance rate, while only 3 out of 7 inland regions (42.9%) satisfied the criteria. The average hardness of compliant regions was 141.3 mg/L (hard water category), while non-compliant regions averaged 73.0 mg/L (soft water category), showing a difference of 68.4 mg/L. This clearly demonstrates that higher hardness is highly advantageous for both health functionality and palatability evaluation. K-index showed a strong positive correlation with hardness, and higher hardness was associated with abundant mineral content, which also increased O-index. This study has significant academic value in introducing a positive evaluation system using beneficial minerals and water quality indices, moving beyond pollution-focused assessments in domestic campground groundwater research. The application of K-index and O-index to Korean groundwater validated that healthiness and palatability can be reasonably distinguished in Korea's geological environment, and quantitatively demonstrated that hardness plays a critical role in evaluating both indices. The results can be utilized for practical decision-making including campground site selection, water quality improvement planning, and marketing strategy development, and can also serve as baseline data for predicting seawater intrusion impacts due to climate change.
