시간기반 미디어아트의 진본성 개념과 보존전략의 관계 = <가변매체 네트워크>와 <미디어아트의 문제들>의 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 시간기반 미디어아트의 진본성 개념과 보존전략의 관계를 분석하고자 한다. 시간기반 미디어아트는 시간적 지속성이 구조화된 작업을 총칭하며 필름, 비디오, 35mm 슬라이드, 오디오, 컴퓨터 프로그래밍을 주된 매체로 사용한다. 본 연구의 방법, 범위, 결론은 다음과 같다. 먼저 시간기반 미디어아트의 전시 형식에 따라 문화재와 정격연주에서 각각 논의된 진본성과 정격성 개념을 분석한다. 이를 통해 시간기반 미디어아트의 진본성 개념을 도출한다. 둘째로 시간기반 미디어아트에서 작품에 사용된 매체의 의미와 진본성의 상관관계를 분석하고 진본성 개념이 보존전략에 어떻게 적용되는지 연구한다. 작품의 진본성 판단에 근거하여 기술적인 대안을 모색함으로써 모방, 이주, 재해석, 과도기적 모방, 재구성의 보존전략을 분석한다. 그리고 시간기반 미디어아트 보존연구 프로젝트인 <가변매체 네트워크>와 <미디어아트의 문제들>의 사례를 분석한다. 이를 통해 국내 시간기반 미디어아트의 보존 논의에 시사하는 바를 제시한다. 두 사례는 미술관과 보존처리 전문기관들과의 협업을 통해 전문성을 확보하고 보존연구를 구체화했다는 점에서 진본성과 보존전략의 관계를 분석하는데 유용하다. <가변매체 네트워크>의 사례는 다양한 매체의 특성을 연구하고 보존개념을 정의함으로써 보존전략을 제시하였고, <미디어아트의 문제들>의 사례는 보존과정의 단계별로 지침을 제시함으로써 해당 단계에서 필요한 정보를 제공하였다. 국내의 시간기반 미디어아트 보존연구는 미술관과 보존처리 전문기관과의 협업체계를 만들어 보존논의를 활성화해야 한다. 네트워크를 형성하고 지속적으로 보존 관련 정보를 공유해야 한다. 다학제적 연구로써 인문예술, 보존학, 정보기술 관련 학제 및 보존처리 전문기관과의 융복합 연구를 위한 협력구조도 중요하다. 또한, 연구결과를 발표하여 보존문제를 공론화 하고, 국내 상황에 맞는 표준 지침을 작성할 필요가 있다. 지침은 매체의 상태와 형식에 따른 사례들과 작품을 관리, 보존하는 과정에 대한 구체적인 항목들이 도출될 수 있어야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the notion of authenticity and conservation strategy in time-based media art. Time-based media art refers to artwork structured in temporal duration using film, video, 35mm slide, audio, computer programming as a medium. The method, scope and conclusion of this research are as follows: First, this paper analyzes the notion of authenticity which is respectively discussed in cultural asset and authentic performance according to the display format of the time-based media art. Through this process, this paper attempts to emphasize the authentic notion of time-based media art. Second, the correlation between the meaning and authenticity of the medium used in time-based media art is analyzed. Additionally, method of applying the notion of authenticity to conservation strategy is examined. By investigating technological alternatives based on the judgment of authenticity of an artwork, the paper analyzes conservation strategies such as emulation, migration, reinterpretation, transitional emulation, and reconstruction. Lastly, suggestions regarding conservation of South Korean time-based media art are presented. The suggestions are made through two case studies of time-based media art conservation: Variable Media Network(VMN), and Matters in Media Art(MMA). The two case studies implemented the conservation research focusing on art galleries, while obtaining professionalism through cooperation with organizations specializing in conservation, and formalizing conservation research. For this reason, the relationship between authenticity and conservation strategy can be effectively analyzed. The case of VMN proposed the conservation strategy through researching variety of characteristics of the medium and defining the notion of conservation. On the other hand, the case of MMA proposed guidelines for each stages of conservation, giving necessary information for relative stages. The South Korean time-based media art conservation research must create a cooperative system between art museums and organizations specializing in conservation to mobilize conservation discussions. Also, a network should be formed for continuous information exchange regarding conservation. The cooperative structure of conservation institute with academic disciplines such as arts and humanities, conservation research, and information technology is significant for multidisciplinary research on conservation of time-based media art. Moreover, exchanging research results should be followed by creating a standard guideline appropriate for South Korea. The guideline should entail specific clause regarding cases related to medium’s condition and format, as well as maintaining and conserving the artwork.
