The public conflicts between governments, or governments and local residents have greatly increased since the introduction of a local autonomy system in 1995. Accordingly, the articles dealing with public conflicts have been on the increase. This paper analyzed twenty seven articles of public disputes about research trends and methodologies published between 1996 and 2007 on both the Korean Review of Public Administration and the Korean Review of Policy Studies. The criteria of analyses were the purposes of researches, research methodologies, and the features of research resources. The large number of researches was based on the case study methods and they were examined whether they adopted valid methods and how much they were reliable. The observation revealed that the purposes of studies was mainly to suggest a practical idea to resolve public conflicts. The number of theory verification or theory building research papers was relatively few. Second, the qualitative approaches, especially a case study method, to do research were more often used than quantitative ones. Third, in terms of research materials, the researchers used the second data such as literature review, articles, or newspapers frequently. Seventeen papers among nineteen case studies dealt with a single case. There were very few cases that presented a study protocol for case studies, or a practical way to collect case data, or a resource gathering path. The investigation, as a result, showed that theoretical dissertations needed to be increased to accumulate scientific information systematically. Second, the research papers required to utilize various ways of research methods. Finally, the principles of a case study should be strictly applied to it to improve validity of the study.
