요른 웃존 건축의 지역성 구현에 관한 연구 - 박스베어드 교회 분석을 중심으로 - = A Study on the Realization of Locality in Jørn Utzon Architecture - Focusing on the analysis of the Bagsværd Church -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

(연구배경 및 목적) 건축에서 지역성에 관한 많은 논지가 있었고, 지역성 구현과 관련하여 여러 건축가나 건축작품들이 소개되고 평가되었다.‘비판적 지역주의’로 분류하기도 하고, 표현적 유사성을 모아 디자인 원리라고 정리하기도 하였다. 하지만 지역성 구현에 대한 지금까지의 논의들은 단편적 특징을 나열하는 데 머물러 있었다. 지역성이란 그 장소가 품고있는 내면적 특질들의 요소 상호간 ‘융합’과 ‘관계맺음’의 복합적인 과정을 통해서 드러나는 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지역성 구현에 있어 보다 복합적이며 현상학적 접근을 시도하였던 건축가 요른 웃존(Jørn Utzon)의 건축 개념과 작품에 주목하였으며, 특히 그의 대표작 박스베어드 교회(Bagsværd Church)를 분석의 주대상으로 삼았다. 박스베어드 교회는 지역의 역사성과 다문화적 풍토성을 잘 소화해 낸 우수한 작품으로 평가된다. 역사성과 풍토성이 아이콘화 되어서 단편적으로 나열되어 있는 것이 아니라, 다양한 특징들이 서로 엉켜서 이전에 없던 독특한 형태를 창출하였다. (연구방법) 이 연구의 논리적 전개를 위하여 지역 및 지역성의 의미에 대한 정의부터 다시 한다. 이를 위한 중심적인 논지는 철학가 하이데거(Martin Heidegger)의 ‘대지’와 ‘세계’에 관한 현상학적 해석에 기대어 정립한다. 특히 지역의 은폐되어 있던 내면적 특질들이 각 요소들간의 상호 직조에 의해 형태가 정립되어진다는 논리적 고찰을 진행한다. 다음으로 건축가 요른 웃존의 건축적 사상과 주요한 언설들의 의미에 대해 분석한다. 이 분석 잣대로 웃존의 대표작들의 특징과 의미를 재조명하고, 본 연구의 주 분석 대상 건축물인 박스베어드 교회를 더욱 깊이 있게 들여다보고자 한다. (결과) 건축가 웃존의 건축 개념과 작품은 지역성 구현의 근원적 의미를 살피기에 좋은 모델이다. 근대 건축의 주류를 승계함과 동시에 근대건축에서 도외시하였던 건축의 의미와 가치에 대해 사유하고 작품으로 실험하였다. 근대건축의 구축방식을 취하고는 있으나 획일적인 시스템에 빠지지 않고, 대지와 세계 사이의 복합적 요소들이 직조되는 과정을 통해 이전에 없던 독특한 형태를 창출해내었다. (결론) 지역성의 구현 사례로 분석하였던 박스베어드 교회의 내부공간은 고요하고 평화로우며 성스러운 느낌을 주는 반면, 외부는 안전과 보호의 느낌을 발산하고 있다. 신과의 연결, 환경과의 연결, 내면적 정서와 의 연결에 의해 대지에의 귀속됨과 세계의 발산됨이 동시에 드러난다. 과거 전통적인 수도원식 종교건물이 가지고 있는 위압적인 측면이 아니라, 안전과 보호, 그리고 신과의 고요한 만남을 경험하게 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

(Background and Purpose) There have been abundant arguments about locality in architecture, showing and evaluating several architectures and architects on locality implementation. One denominates it “critical regionalism,” as well as “design principle” because of its expressional similarity. However, arguments about locality implementation still remain in exhibiting its simplistic features. Locality shows its true meanings through the complex process of fusion and relation performed by the internal characteristics of the specific location. Therefore, this research focuses on and analyzes the architect Jørn Utzon, who most attempted to consider locality implementation complexly and phenomenologically. Bagsværd Church is evaluated as an architecture thoroughly expressing the local history and its multicultural endemic characteristic. Historicity and endemicity are not listed in fragments to be iconized, but various features intertwine to create a unique, never-been-seen-before form. (Method) For the logical development of this study, regionality and its meaning is redefined. The central argument for the redefinition is based on the phenomenological interpretation of the philosopher Martin Heidegger's “earth” and “world.” It proceeds with a logical examination that the hidden internal characteristics of the region are established by mutual weaving between each element. Next, we analyze Utzon’s architectural thought and the meaning of major speeches. Based on this analysis, the characteristics and meaning of Utzon's representative works are re-examined while exploring Bagsværd Church, the main target analysis of this study. (Results) Utzon's architectural concepts and works are good models for examining the fundamental meaning of realizing locality. While inheriting the mainstream of modern architecture, he thought about the meaning and value of architecture, which was neglected in modern building planning and design, experimenting with his works. Although it adopts the construction method of modern architecture, it does not fall into a uniform system, and creates a unique form that has never existed before, through the process of weaving complex elements between the earth and the world. (Conclusion) The interior space of Bagsværd Church―analyzed as an example of locality―gives a sense of calm, peace, and sacredness, while the exterior radiates a feeling of safety and protection. Through connection with God, connection with the environment, and with inner emotions, one simultaneously feels as belonging to the earth and a feeling of being released. It is not the overbearing aspect of the traditional monastic religious buildings of the past, but rather the experience of safety, protection, and a quiet encounter with God.
