Seongsanbyeogok is a collection of descriptive poems expressing beautiful seasonal changes of scenery of Seongsan; and the comfortable life in quiet retirement of the hero, that is, his reading, convivial mood, and elegance of playing string instrument. These poems were composed, out of longing for and envy of Kim Seong-won, Seohadang, by Songgang.
In commenting Songgang's works, all of them have been eulogized as original, creative masterpieces, epoch-making loftiest works but Seongsanbyeolgok. The writer, while considering the value of these poems produced in his native country, noticed that the names of places, famed spots have not been clarified, resulting in difficulty in understanding and annotating Songang's works. This motivated the writer to do this research.
The writer surveyed the activities of poems and songs in Honam area as remote causes of Songgan's composition; and as direct causes, he investigated Seongsan poem site in Shingyeongjeong bower, and summerhouses concerned that served as poem sites, and visitors to these summerhouses and bowers, thus trying to find the significance of how those poems were produced.
Then, the writer considered the relationship between the personalty of Seonggang as a lyrical poet and his life in retirement as Seongsan; clarified his opinion concerning the year of composition where various opinions collide; attempted to correct ambiguous annotation coming from ignorance of the names of places and famed spots; thus hoping to contribute to the correct understanding of his works.
And in the consideration of the content, main emphasis was placed on the plot and expression in order to reveal the value of those poems.
