Leibniz regards a corporeal substance, which is composed of monads, as ‘one substance’. This position seems to be contradictory to his monadology. Therefore, many scholars have ignored Leibniz’s view that corporeal substance is ‘one substance’, or consider this only as a sview from his theory of substance in his early works, which has been discarded afterwards. This research will show that Leibniz adheres to this position throughout his lifetime; that although Leibniz uses the concepts such as substantial form and substantial bond to explain his view, but the concept of substantial bond doesn’t fit in with his philosophical system; that to explain the unity of the corporeal substance, the concept of substancial form and the theory of preestablished harmony are sufficient; and that the view that the corporeal substance is ‘one substance’ inconsistent with the position that the monad is ‘one substance’, as a result of this the view that the corporeal substance is ‘one substance’ has to be discarded.
To express his concept of substance, Leibniz uses various terms, which are not always used consistently. This makes it difficult to determine whether he actually admits of two different kinds of substances or not. But we can find that individual substance, simple substance and monad are terms for one the same substance and corporeal substance, which is a union of body and soul, means the same as living being, complex substance, living substance and so on. And since around 1686 Leibniz mentions of the corporeal substance to be ‘one substance’. From 1703 till 1711, this view is withdrawn, but from 1711 on he adheres to it ever since.
Leibniz states in his early theory of substance that the corporeal substance has a substantial form and is therefore one itself. Given this he concludes that the corporeal substance would be ‘one substance’. Then, since 1706 Leibniz insists in his disputation with Tournemine and in his letter to Des Bosses that between body and soul, there exists not merely an ideal union but a real union, and that it is the substantial bond which enables this real union. But to explain that the corporeal substance is in comparison to the simple aggregation of monads one itself, the theory of preestablished harmony would be sufficient, whereas the view of real unions or substantial bonds opposes the monadology and should therefore be discarded.
Leibniz’s view that the corporeal substance is, in contrast with simple aggregations, one itself, is acceptable. But the view, a corporeal substance would be ‘one substance’, is nevertheless uncombinable with the contention that a monad is ‘one substance’, because the contention that the aggregation of monads would be ‘one substance’ is equivalent to the contention that a monad is not ‘one substance’. This opposes the contention that a monad would be ‘one substance’. A corporeal substance is in contrast with a simple aggregation of monads one itself, but in comparison to monads only a relative unity.
Nevertheless, the rejection of the idea of the corporeal substance as ‘one substance’ doesn’t influence Leibniz’s philosophy at all. The rejection of this idea doesn’t mean that the idea of corporeal substance being in contrast with simple aggregations one itself either, has to be rejected. The unity of corporeal substances is in comparison to the unity of monads a relative unity, therefore the view that a corporeal substance would be itself a unity fits in accordable with the contention that a monad would be a unity itself.
The unity of corporeal substances is necessary to explain the characteristics of living being which consist of a union of body and soul. Leibniz explains that all monads exist in the form of a union of soul and organic body. Hence, if the view that the corporeal substance would be ‘one substance’ is only discarded, the theory of corporeal substance can function as a foundation for Leibniz’
