로맨스 판타지 웹툰에서 아르누보 디자인의 적용 사례 연구 = A Study on the Application of Art Nouveau Designs in Romance Fantasy Webtoons

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서는 아르누보 디자인이 로맨스 판타지 웹툰에 적용된 사례를 조사하고, 웹툰과 현대 미디어에서 아르누보 디자인의 의미, 역할, 전망에 대해 연구한다. 이를 위하여 아르누보 양식의 역사와 특성에 대한 제고찰과 만화, 애니메이션, 일러스트레이션, 특히 웹툰에 아르누보 디자인이 도입된 사례와 표현 특성에 대해 조사하였다. 또한, 로맨스 판타지 웹툰에서 아르누보 디자인을 사용하는 작품들이 최근 증가하고 있는 이유를 분석하며, 아르누보 디자인의 역할과 의미를 고찰하였다. 이 외에도 웹툰 이외의 다른 미디어에서 아르누보 디자인의 적용 가능성을 전망하였다.
우선, 19세기부터 시작된 아르누보 양식의 제고찰을 통하여 아르누보 양식은 꽃 패턴, 넝쿨, 사람 등 자연물의 곡선을 이용하여 장식성, 디자인성, 상징성을 강조하는 특징이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 건축, 디자인, 공예품 등에 많은 영향을 미쳤고, 순정만화의 배경 장식에도 사용되었다. 이러한 아르누보 양식에서 유래한 아르누보 디자인은 만화, 애니메이션, 일러스트레이션 등 그림 매체에서 자연물의 사실적 표현, 장식적 디자인, 그리고 추상적인 패턴으로 표현되어 스토리의 시대적 배경을 알려 주거나, 심미적 표현을 개선하기 위해 사용됨을 알 수 있었다.
네이버 웹툰의 조사 결과에서 최근 아르누보 디자인을 사용하는 작품들이 증가하고 있었다. 또한, 만화와는 달리 새로운 방법으로 제작되고 소비되는 웹툰의 특성 때문에 아르누보 디자인을 새롭게 사용하는 사례들도 나타났다. 웹툰에서는 보다 다양하고 복잡한 문양과 그라데이션 등 특수 효과를 넣어 장식성 및 심미적을 개선할 수 있었다. 컷과 컷 사이에 고의로 아르누보 디자인으로 장식한 공간을 넣거나, 일러스트레이션 페이지에 아르누보 디자인을 삽입함으로써 아르누보 디자인은 스토리의 강조, 시간의 흐름 표현, 그리고 독자의 쉬어 가는 공간 제공 등의 새로운 역할을 하기도 한다.
향후 컴퓨터 그래픽 소프트웨어가 발전하고, 다양한 패턴 데이터가 축적 된다면 앞으로 더 심미적이고 다양한 기능의 아르누보 디자인을 웹툰에서 볼 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 또한, 3차원 웹툰, VR, 게임, 영화, 드라마 속의 세계나 가상세계에서도 아르누보 디자인이 사용될 것으로 전망된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis investigates the Art Nouveau designs applied to Romance Fantasy Webtoons and researches the meaning, role, and prospect of Art Nouveau design in webtoons and modern media. For this purpose, the history and characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement are first reviewed. Then, the cases of Art Nouveau designs adopted in cartoons, animations, and webtoons are investigated, and the characteristics of the designs in those cases are studied. In addition, the role and meaning of Art Nouveau designs in Romance Fantasy webtoons are considered by analyzing why the works using such designs are increasing recently. In addition to this, the applicability of Art Nouveau design in modern media other than webtoons is predicted.
First of all, through the study of the Art Nouveau movement that began in the 19th century, it is found that the Art Nouveau style has the characteristic of emphasizing decorativeness, design, and symbolism by using the curves of natural objects such as flower patterns, vines, and humans. This had a great influence on architecture, design, and crafts, and it also had an influence on the background decoration of the shojo manga that appeared around the 1960s in Japan. The study found that Art Nouveau design is used for aesthetic expressions of natural objects, design decorativeness, and abstract patterns in cartoons, animations, and modern media. It is also used to describe the historical background and place of the story by showing Art Nouveau works in the cartoons.
According to the research on Naver Webtoons in this thesis, the number of works adopting Art Nouveau design is increasing recently. Also, as webtoons are produced and consumed in a new way different from conventional pen-drawing comics, there are cases where Art Nouveau designs are used as a new method. Specifically, it is found that adding special effects such as gradations with diverse and complex patterns in a webtoon improves decorativeness and aesthetic expressions. Also, intentionally adding a space decorated with Art Nouveau design or inserting Art Nouveau design in an illustration page, the Art Nouveau design is shown to play a new role, such as emphasizing the story, expressing the passage of time, and providing a space for readers to relax.
As computer graphic software develops and pattern data are accumulated, it is expected that more aesthetic and multifunctional Art Nouveau designs will be seen in webtoons. In addition, it is expected that Art Nouveau design will be used to decorate the virtual world in 3D webtoons, VR, games, movies, and dramas.
