Historically, Korean modern dance or the New Dance was blindly introduced in Korea, a colony of Imperial Japan, by way of professional dancers or Gisaengs who learned dancing in the name of western dance, modern dance or new dance in Japan at the outset of Japan's cultural control over Korean people after the Samil Independence Movement (Mar 1, 1919) where a supposition that culture is modernity or something new came to take a hegemony in contemporary society. In other words, modern dance popularized in Korea under the rule of Imperial Japan emerged in form of our contemporary dance and ballet or in a new combination of them. Modern dance is construed as a term that refers to all foreign dances popularized in Korea from the open-door efflorescence of modern Korea to the period of Japanese imperialism, and it is estimated that the birth of modern dance came simply from New Dance (a sort of dance akin to our contemporary dance) Recital performed by Ishii Baku (石井漠) at the Gyeongseong Public Hall in 1926. And it is commonly accepted that the New Dance or modern dance of Korea came from Bae Gu-ja's musical dance performance (1929) and Choi Seung-hee's creative dance performance (1930). However, it is justifiable to say that this mainstream standpoint exclude professional Gisaeng's dance from all categories of modern dance.
Thus, this study seeks to investigate the history of modern dance performed by Gisaeng and new dancers during the period of Japanese imperialism, so that it may formulate the historical introduction and development of modern ballet, not modern dance. In order to investigate history of modern ballet that has been likely overlooked in the history of Korean modern dance so far, this study refers to historical literatures (Gyeongseong Ilbo, Maeil Shinbo, Joseon Expo Gyeongseong Sponsorship Report, magazines, independent volumes, etc) and archives on in-depth interviews with veterans and associated parties in Korean modern dance world, so that it can focus on the construction of modern dance (New Dance) terms during the period of Japanese imperialism, possible associations of Gisaeng's dance with ballet and possible associations of western dance with ballet with a view to re-highlight the modern ballet in modern dances during the period of Japanese imperialism. Hence, it is expected that this study will provide reference materials for follow-up studies on the history of Korean modern dance and will also contribute to investigating the history of modern ballet in Korea.
