인도네시아인들의 피부미용 관행: 전통과 현대성을 잇는 정체성 만들기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 흰 피부를 선호하는 방식으로 구성된 인도네시아인들의 미의식과 미백 관리의 실천이 인도네시아의 역사적이고 사회문화적인 맥락 속에서 지니는 함의를 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 첫째, 인도네시아 자바 문화권인 족자카르타(Yogyakarta)와 수라카르타(Surakarta) 지역의 전통 왕실과 민간에서 행해지던 다양한 미용 관행을 고찰하고, 둘째, 현대 인도네시아 사회에서 흰 피부를 아름답고 이상적인 피부로 제안하는 다양한 맥락들과 기제들 및 미백을 실천하는 여성들의 다양한 노력 양상들을 고찰하였다. 그리고 이러한 과정 속에서 여성들이 스스로의 피부 미백 노력에 대해 생산해내는 담론들과 이러한 노력들이 여성 자신의 일상 공간에서 귀결되는 모습에도 주목하였다. 그리고 마지막 셋째, 인도네시아인들이 미백 관리를 실천함으로써 얻는 만족감과 흰 피부 선호 현상이 인도네시아 사회 속에서 가지는 함의를 논하였다. 그럼으로써 본 연구는 전통과 현대의 다양한 문화목록들을 총동원하여 인도네시아인들이 피부 미백 관행을 통해 구성해내는 정체성 동학의 민족지를 완성해 낸 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores Indonesian sense of beauty and the implication of skin whitening practice in Indonesia in the socio-cultural and historical context. For this, first, the researcher investigates several beauty practices in Yogyakarta and Surakarta, which were developed in the royal palace and the folks in that area. And second, the researcher studies the contexts which propose the white skin as the beautiful and ideal skin tone as well as studies the variety of efforts which Indonesian women are competing. And then the researcher discusses the implication of the white skin preference and the practice of skin whitening. Therefore, this study complete an ethnography of identity constituted through skin whitening practice and by mobilizing various cultural repertoires both in tradition and modern society.
