Among various advanced energy storage systems, lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation applications owing to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh kg-1 and the low cost and environmental benignity of sulfur cathodes. Despite these advantages, several obstacles still impede their practical deployment. During cycling, highly soluble intermediate polysulfides dissolve into the electrolyte and migrate between the cathode and anode, leading to irreversible Li2S2/Li2S deposits on the lithium metal anode. This results in continuous active material loss, anode passivation, and reduced coulombic efficiency, originating from severe shuttle reactions and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics (SRR/SER). Developing electrocatalysts that accelerate sulfur redox reactions while suppressing shuttle induced passivation is therefore essential.
Although extensive studies have examined various transition metal based catalysts such as sulfides, oxides, and nitrides, research on transition metal hydroxides remains scarce, with limited comparative or mechanistic investigations. Herein, we present a comparative study between a layered hydroxide catalyst and its spinel oxide counterpart to elucidate how their structural and compositional differences influence SRR and SER in Li-S batteries. The NFMOH-PE based full cell exhibits significantly enhanced polysulfide adsorption and faster conversion kinetics compared with NFMO-PE, delivering a high discharge capacity of 792 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles. These results highlight the potential of layered hydroxide structures as effective electrocatalysts and provide guidance for designing next-generation transition metal hydroxide catalysts for Li-S batteries.
