This study outlines the results of previous research on the perceptions of non-native learners of Korean and their teachers on gender-preferential language differences Korean education. This data will be used as the basis for clarification of language difference in the Korean teacher's classroom language usage.
The first chapter presents the purposes and necessity of this study. Learners of a foreign language often attempt to understand the target language's nuances through the teacher's speech. In this sense, the phrases and expressions a teacher chooses have important impact on the Korean learner. In the domestic Korean language education situation, the vast majority of Korean teachers are women. We can assume then that this predominantly female environment would lead to a predominance of female-preferred language and that male teachers may tend to use different language in the classroom. Up to now there has been little research on these differences and their impact on students' learning. This study attempts to fill this void.
Previous studies are discussed and summarized in the second chapter. Gender-preferential language differences in Korea and other countries as well are examined with respect to vocabulary, syntax and phonemics.
The third chapter explains the procedure of selecting and collecting resources for this study as well as the method of study. To assist in the examination of gender-preferential language differences methods for analysis of interjections, polite expressions and intonation are introduced.
The fourth chapter compares and analyzes the perceptions of Korean teachers and Korean learners displayed in previous studies and also analyzes the interrogative rising intonation and interjection of female teachers in the Korean classroom. It also examines the intonation of the imperative sentences, the intonation of the descriptive sentences, and the usage of polite expressions.
The results show that male Korean teachers tends to use 'Ja' (자), 'Ah'(아), 'nae' (네)style as interjections while female Korean teachers tend to use 'ye' (예) and eh(어) as interjections. This confirms that men and women use other interjections in same class situation. That analyze exclamation interjection use in teacher's classroom class it is could.
Next polite expressions and confirming interrogative sentences are analyzed. Both female Korean teachers and male Korean teachers tend to use often 'a(e/ye)eyo(- 아(어/여)요)' style in polite expression. One interesting aspect of analysis was that in the female Korean teacher's classroom when the teacher asked a question using the '- 아(어/여)요' form, students answered in the '-upnita(- ㅂ / 습니다)' style.
Despite the fact that most male teachers responded when surveyed that they tended to prefer '- ㅂ / 습니다' form for polite expression, in classroom analysis of three different Korean teaching institutions, male Korean teachers more often used the '- 아(어/여)요' form.
The intonation of interrogative sentences was analysed next and male Korean teachers' final intonation was low in %(boundary tone). while % ended high. Meanwhile female teachers ended % of their sentences with a rising intonation and % of their sentences with a low intonation. This shows that women tend to use the rising intonation more than men in their teaching.
In the concluding chapter the results of the study are summarized and related current issues in Korean education are discussed. Finally ideas and possibilities for further study are outlined.
