In accordance with the learners’ needs and desires, Communication-oriented and practical English-oriented programs have been adopted in the recent college liberal arts English education . The communicative language teaching program that utilizes CMC (Computer Mediated Communication), in which the negotiation of meaning can be actively attained interactively, can contribute to expanding communication ability and eventually can enhance the learners’ proficiency in using practical English. So this study was conducted to present the methods of teaching college liberal arts English that is satisfactory to both teachers and learners. Accordingly CSEP(Cho Sook's English Program) as a model of college liberal arts English program utilizing CMC was developed. CSEP was developed as an online and offline learning program in consideration of the learners’ affective(interest, familiarity, participation and self-confidence etc) domain by supplementing and combining the letter-based CMC and voice-based CMC, based on Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory and Heinich’ Long-term Memory Principle in learning theories. In order to enhance the learners’ communication abilities and proficiency in English, the program was structured so that the learners’ activities are divided into those pre-activities, activities, post-activities so that the activities can be developed by stages.
Subsequently, this study conducted communication-oriented class work activities by applying different experimental treatment to one control group (Face to Face Communication: FFC) and three experimental groups (E-mail, Chatting, CSEP), totaling four groups for sixteen weeks.
The effects of various types of CMC and the degree of students’cognitive(listening, grammar/vocabulary, reading, and writing) and affective((interest, familiarity, participation and self-confidence etc) achievement were compared and verified. The effects of CSEP, a college practical English program model that utilizes this researcher’s teaching model which was applying CMC was also compared and verified with other CMC groups. Their effects in the affective domain were likewise verified. The purpose of this research was to propose a college practical English program based on these study results.
When students learn English, the true their interactions are, the more opportunities for learning through interactions they will have, and the more feedback they will receive. Thus, when meaningful negotiations are made on CMC basis, students can learn English more effectively. In other words, it is evident that true interaction is an important factor of success when learning a second language.
In CSEP, Of the model for English class work that utilizing CMC, the affective domain, Such as feedback, interest, participation, and satisfaction was considered so as to provide the students with true interaction, and research tasks on teaching methods in which the conditions for such true interactions are well integrated with the effective type of CMC in each English domain were presented.
The hypothesis of research are as follows. First, English class work utilizing CMC is likely to have more positive effects than FFC task class work in terms of the degree of the learners’ achievements. Second, English task class work utilizing CSEP, The teaching model introduced in this research, is likely to have more positive effects than English task class work utilizing other FFC or One-type CMCs (E-mail or Letter-based Chatting), in terms of the degree of the learners’ achievements. Third, English task class work utilizing CSEP will have more positive effects in the affective domain of the learners than English task class work utilizing other CMC utilizing One-type. The first, Second, Third hypotheses were affirmed.
The group utilizing the CSEP teaching class work model showed results that were positively significant in terms of the degree of the learners’ cognitive domain(listening, reading, and writing) achievement, compared with the control group or the group that engaged in class work utilizing the other CMCs. In terms of the degree of the learners' grammar/vocabulary achievement, however, there were no significant differences among the groups.
The results of the evaluation of the affective domain of the group that engaged in class work utilizing CSEP were more positive than those of the other groups. In other words, the group utilizing the CSEP teaching model showed greater improvement in terms of interest in learning English, familiarity, positive participation and self-confidence in the degree of proficiency, etc than the other groups.
In conclusion, in this research, compared with the group that engaged in class work utilizing FFC or E-mail or Chatting or CSEP, the class work model applying CSEP, which utilizes all the good points of the former groups(FFC, E-mail, Letter-based Chatting) and Voice-based Chatting was more effective, comprehensively and in a way that is multi-laterally suitable to the theme.
It may be concluded that mutual feedback, true meaningful negotiation, and diverse task class work methods were more positively applied to motivation, and that due to this, the learners showed more satisfactory results in terms of the degree of their achievements and in the affective domain.
Thus, the results of the verification of the CSEP class work model, Which was structured in consideration of the learners’cognitive and affective domains, showed that class work utilizing CSEP has significantly more positive effects in terms of the degree of the learners’ cognitive domain and in the affective domain.
It is believed that if universities design and operate a college practical English program like CSEP, taking a broader view by stage and by level, and if they endeavor to improve their actual educational and computer environments, the students’ English abilities will be greatly enhanced.
