세계 한국학의 발전을 위한 성찰적 접근 = A Reflective Approach for the Development of Worldwide Korean Studies

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the change in the position of Korean studies from the perspective of global Area studies. By dividing this into two stages, first in which the expansion of Korean studies was made, and the second in which the status of Korean studies is globally enhanced. This expansion of Korean studies was greatly attributed to the economic growth and democratization of Korea, the spread of Korean popular culture, the North Korean nuclear issue and the publication of English-translated materials and open access through internet has increased in demand of Korean studies. Despite the rapid growth and development of Korean Studies, there are some unsolved problems left in current Korean studies. Including the absence of world-class researchers representing Korean studies, the difficulty in basic research and education of Korean studies, and the deterioration of research and development due to the political orientation of Korean public diplomacy institutions. Therefore, this paper suggests focusing on the new perspective beyond East Asia. Fostering world-class scholars through this new perspective will help preparing next stage of Korean studies.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 세계 지역학의 차원에서 바라본 한국학의 입지 변화를 세계 한국학의 확대가 이루어진 제1기, 세계 지역학 내에서 한국학의 위상이 제고된 제2기로 나누어 분석하였다. 이러한 한국학의 확대 현상은 한국의 경제성장과 민주화에 크게 힘입었으며, 한국의 성장에 따라 한국을 연구하고자 하는 수요 측면에서의 증가와 한국 대중문화의 확산, 북한 핵문제와 한국학 관련 자료들의 영문 출간 및 인터넷을 통한 공개 등이 주요한 요인으로 작용하였다. 이러한 한국학의 비약적인 성장과 발전에도 불구, 현재의 한국학은 여전히 몇몇 주요 문제들을 해결하지 못하고 있다. 한국학을 대표하는 세계적 연구자의 부재, 한국학의 기초 연구와 교육의 난항, 한국의 공공외교 기관들의 정치적 성향으로 인한 연구 발전 저해 등이 그것이다. 상기된 한국학의 주요 문제들의 해결을 위해서 본 논문은 동아시아를 넘어선 새로운 관점의 개척, 이러한 새로운 관점과 주제를 통한 세계적 학자 양성에의 주력을 제시한다. 미래 한국학의 과제를 위해 한국의 주요 고등기관의 노력을 통한 한국학 관련 신진 연구자들에 대한 지원, 국내 학계와 세계 한국학계가 소통할 수 있는 새로운 장을 마련 하는 것이 필요함을 강조하고 있다.
