The purpose of this paper is to theoretically and empirically illuminate the collective fever, moral commitment and solidarity of the June Uprisings in 1987. I attempt to explore the cognitive, emotional, and moral dimensions of social movements, based upon Durkheim’s conceptualization of ritual as a mechanism of creating collective effervescence, collective consciousness and solidarity. Taking into account the difference between institutionalized religious rituals and uninstitutionalized social movements, I also theorize ‘separation’ and ‘liminal’ performances through which social movements trigger religious ritual-like effects. To do so, I draw upon the post-Durkheimian theories of ritual that focus on various ritualizing strategies and practices. In terms of both the Durkheimian and the post-Durkheimian theories of ritual, this paper sheds light on the fact that the National Coalition for Democratic Constitution formed as a ritual planning group aligned the frames of liberal and minjung democracies and that it drew up movement scripts to help participants recognize, feel and evaluate the binary opposition of democracy and dictatorship. I examine the process by which movement participants came to enter into the ‘sacred’ world distinct from the profane as various repertoires of collective behaviors were continuously performed day by day. In this study, I argue that the collective solidarity among movement leaders, supporters and bystanders was formed in this sacred world where democratic values embedded in the frame of constitutional revision became effervescent.
