(Multilingual Abstract)

This paper traces the changing patterns of relations between the military and civil society in Korea since independence. Paper also connects the changing patterns of relation with the parallel economic development, development of civil society and democratization process. As economic development played a big role in the development of middle class during Park Chung-hee, this group later became the driving force in the process of democratization of the political system and society and in weakening of the military dominance in politics. Since, the development of an organized civilian sector and strengthening of a civilian political government over the years, the Korean military has moved from a repressive force to integration with civil society by accepting some of the civilian values and norms, and by adopting the civilian government rules to the military.
