가속화 과정으로서의 근대화 = Modernization as the Process of Acceleration

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Velocity can be characterized as one of the most important phenomena in the modern society. However, the social sciences, including sociology, seem to pay little attention to it as the subject of discourse, even though velocity and acceleration are constituent elements of the structure of the western society since the industrial revolution. Fortunately, since the inaugurating works carried out by Paul Virilio, who is a French political philosopher, also a culture-media-film theorist, and more importantly, the founder of dromology, velocity and acceleration have become the point of keen interest among academics and ordinary people as well. For instance, scholars like David Harvey, Peter Borscheid and Hartmut Rosa published the books on acceleration or tempo. This paper attempts to interpret modernization as the process of acceleration. The focus of analysis will be put on the relations between rationalization, industrialization, differentiation, individualization, the technical control and domination over nature, and mechanization and automation by virtue of the process of acceleration. As the outcome of analysis, the following will be demonstrated: the process of acceleration has been caused by the joint interactions of the forementioned processes.
