국어사전의 표제어 늘리기와 ‘유령어’ 범주의 문제 = Increase of Headwords in Korean Dictionary and ‘Ghost Word’ Problem

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study to examine the situations of increase of the number of headwords that has been pointed out as a bad example of compilation of Korean dictionary, to review critically the concept of ‘ghost word’ and the adequacy issue of terminology associated with it, and to give some suggestions about ghost word treatment based on the critical review.
As a result, ‘ghost word’ that has been used so far is given some suggestion to use with distinction as follows. First, a word was actually used and was listed in the Korean dictionary, but it is not used now. It is called ‘obsolescence word’. Second, even if it’s listed in the Korean dictionary as a headword, it has never been used in Korean and came from an unknown source. It’s called ‘doggaebimal’. Third, a word that was listed in dictionary by typographical error or misunderstanding is called ‘ghost word’.
In order to prevent abuses of doggaebimal, doggaebimal should not be listed in the dictionary inherently. For this purpose, it’d be nice to point it out in vocabulary information, if a dictionary adds a new word that was not listed in the dictionary before.
In addition, it should be emphasized to study new word regularly as well as obsolescence word. Obsolescence word should not be excluded in the dictionary unilaterally. But at least it’s necessary to distinguish words currently being used from words not being used.
