황성신문 발행진의 정치사회사상에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Publishers' Thought of the Hwangsongshinmun

The purpose of this study is to research the publishers' thought of the Hwangsongshinmun (Hwangsong Daily Newspaper) during the last years of the Chosun Dynasty. Hwangseongshinmun was being Published from Sep. 1989 to Aug. 1910 (12 years). This time that Chosun came to reach an extreme crisis by the Great Powers. In particular, Japan intruded itself into Korea on politics and economy.
In these circumstances, the Chosun's elite had thought and movement to recover the national sovereign and to construct national independence. Hwangseongshinmun's publishers followed the line of the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement (愛國啓蒙運動). And so Hwangsongshinmun was speaking for the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement. In the course of the movement, Hwangsongshinrnun would be educated the people from the press campaign.
We researched the political and press thought of the publishers. The Hwangsongshinmun publishers based upon Confucian idea, but their did not remain the Idea. They pursued the modernization of all aspects including politics, economy, society, culture etc. The Hwangsongshinmun publishers believed the reformed through the reader's enlighten. The Hwangsongshinmun publishers participated in the Patriotic Enlightenment's organizations. And so we estimated that the Hwangsongshinmun was the role of the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 한말 대표적인 민간신문이었던 황성신문 발행진의 정치사회사상을 고찰하고자 하였다. 한말 민간신문의 성격을 살펴보기 위해서 신문 발행진의 정치사회사상을 살펴보는 것은 의미 있다. 왜냐하면 발행진이 갖고 있던 정치사회사상이 신문의 성격 혹은 논조를 결정하는 주요한 변인으로 작용할 수 있기 때문이다.
연구자는 발행진의 정치사회사상을 고찰하기 위하여 그들이 갖고 있는 사회적배경을 살펴보았다. 발행진은 전통적인 유생 가문을 배경으로 하는 신분 배경을 갖고 있었으며, 이에 따라 자연스럽게 한학을 배우는 교육 배경을 갖고 있었다. 이들 중에서 몇 명은 해외 유학을 다녀오기도 했으며, 또한 외국 시찰을 통해 견문을 넓힐 수 있는 기회도 가졌다. 다음으로 발행진의 단체활동을 살펴보았는데, 이들은 대체로 독립협회를 비롯한 애국계몽운동단체에 관여하고 있었다. 물론 이들의 단체활동은 언론활동과 분리되었던 것이 아니라 병행하여 활동하였다. 따라서 이들이 발행한 황성신문은 애국계몽운동과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있었던 것이다.
황성신문 발행진의 사회적 배경에 대한 고찰을 통해서 그들이 갖고 있는 정치사회사상은 개량적 유학사상, 사회개혁의 한계성, 애국계몽운동의 참여 등으로 요약할 수 있다. 이러한 그들의 정치사회사상은 황성신문의 성격을 형성하는데 주요한 변인으로 작용하였음에 틀림없다.
