There are two competing views concerning the position of the feature [lateral] in the feature geometry: the non-coronal hypothesis (Sagey (1986)) and the coronal hypothesis (Levin (1988), McCarthy (1988)). The purpose of this paper is to present an argument for the coronal hypothesis from Korean lateral assimilation. It is only under the coronal hypothesis that we can provide an adequate account for why lateral assimilation in Korean targets only the coronal nasal, without having recourse to such unwanted principles (or conditions) as Kiparsky's (1985) Structure Preservation Principle or the Well-formedness Condition.
