This study uses frameworks from the PIMS model and strategic alliance literatures to explore the relationships among the relative market share and symbiotic alliance in small and medium-sized suppliers. Statistical analysis of the responses of 147 small suppliers in fabricated metals, industrial equipment, auto parts and electrical, and electronic equipment industries leads to the development of a typology of symbiotic market strategy which is useful in explaining the difference of the business performance of various types of suppliers.
