Background/Aims: Benign gastric tumors are rare. Since the advent of gastrofiberscopy, the diagnosis of benign gastric tumors has increased so, their management has become important. The aim of this study was to determine its treatment method through exact diagnosis. Methods: Eighty-two cases of benign gastric tumors which had been treated at the Soonchunhyang University Hospital from January 1992 through December 1998 were analysed. Results: The incidence of benign gastric tumors were 11.7% of all gastric tumors in this period. Of the all benign gastric tumors, 52.4% were epithelial polyps and 68.5% (50 cases) occurred in females. The age of patients ranged from 21 to 78 years and the incidence peaked in 6th decade (32.9%). The most common lesion of tumor was antrum of the stomach in 35 cases. The size of the tumor was less than 10 mm in diameter in 42 cases. Endoscopic polypectomy were performed in 40 cases (48.8%) and open laparotomy were performed in 42 cases (51.2%). Conclusions: These results suggest that when surgical treatment was needed for gastric tumor, the pathological test of frozen section at the time of operation is essential and the treatment method should be dictated by its results.
