기독교 학문의 비전 - 가능성과 필요성 - = Vision of Christian Scholarship: Possibility and Necessity

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

What should be the vision of Christian scholarship after the demise of the myth of academic neutrality in the contemporary postmodern situation? The integration of faith and scholarship is still the important principle for Christian scholarship in our pluralist and relativist culture. Contending for the uniqueness of Christian scholarship because of faith is more strategic than defending how it is possible in spite of faith. Christian scholarship must be able to present a research methodology that is interesting to non-believing scholars and to show excellence of results in order to be credible and persuasive. Active participation to scholarly traditions is necessary. It is unwise and even impossible to ignore age-old traditions and to start all over. An effort to transform the traditions with biblical perspectives is needed. Academic excellence as well as service toward God and neighbor is important for this purpose. Christian scholarship should neither fall into dogmatic hubris on the basis of faith, nor have a defeatist, avoiding attitude. Instead, Christian scholarship must hold onto a vision to overcome the opposition that regards it as “outrageous ideas” and “the academic atmosphere that makes it despair,” through excellent scholarship and contributions that.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

학문의 중립성 신화가 깨어진 오늘의 포스트모던 상황 속에서 기독교 학문은 어떤 비전을 가져야 하는가? 신앙과 학문의 통합과 변혁은 다원주의와 상대주의 상황에서도 여전히 기독교 학문의 중요한 원리이다. 지금은 기독교 학문이 가능함을 변호하기보다는 신앙으로 인해 어떻게 독특한 학문을 할 수 있는지를 보이는 것이 전략적으로 좋다. 기독교 학문이 불신자에게도 신빙성과 설득력이 있으려면 연구 방법론과 가정이 불신자에게도 흥미롭고 결과적으로 탁월함을 보여야 한다. 이를 위해서는 무엇보다 학문 전통에의 적극적 참여가 선행되어야 한다. 수천 년의 역사를 가진 학문 전통을 무시하고 새로 시작하려 하는 것은 어리석을 뿐 아니라 사실 가능하지도 않다. 물론 학문을 기독교적 관점에서 변혁하려는 노력이 필요하다. 학문적 탁월성은 항상 중요하지만 그와 함께 학문을 통해 하나님과 이웃을 섬기려는 태도를 갖추어야 한다. 기독교 학문은 신앙을 토대로 독단적 오만에 빠져서도 안 되지만 패배주의적 소심함이나 회피적 태도에 빠질 이유가 없다. 오히려 기독교 학문이 “터무니 없는 생각”이라는 격렬한 반대나 “좌절감을 느끼게 만드는 학문적 풍토”를 넘어서는 탁월한 기여를 통해 하나님과 이웃 섬김을 실천하는 비전을 갖추어야 한다.
