한국전쟁기 불교계 희생자 조사 현황과 향후 과제 = Status and Prospect on Buddhist Casualties Survey during the Korean War

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 2023년 동국대학교 동국역사문화연구소가 대한불교조계종으로부터 연구 용역을 받아 수행한 「한국전쟁 전후 불교계 희생자 기초 조사 사업 연구 용역」을 토대로 한국전쟁 시기 불교계 희생자의 현황을 소개하고 불교계 희생자 추가 조사를 위한 향후 과제를 제시하기 위한 것이다. 이 사업은 그간 물적 피해 조사에만 머물렀던 한국전쟁 시기 불교계 피해 상황을 처음으로 인적 피해까지 그 범위를 확대하고 목록화하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이 사업에서는 기존에 간행된 관련 자료, 문헌 등에서 총 156명의 한국전쟁 시기 불교계 희생자를 확인하였다. 다만 이 사업은 짧은 조사 기간, 기존 연구의 부족, 자료의 한계 등으로 협소한 조사와 분석을 할 수밖에 없었다는 한계가 있다. 따라서 이후 새로운 자료를 발굴하고, 현장 조사 및 관련 증언과 진술을 확보하는 등 한국전쟁 시기 불교계 희생자에 대한 체계적이고 폭넓은 조사 사업이 필요하다. 또한, 현재 기독교계에서 추진하고 있는 이념 갈등에 의한 한국전쟁 시기 종교계 피해 규명 활동과 달리, 역사적 정합성을 확보하고 사회적 공감대를 형성할 수 있는 불교계 희생자 조사 사업을 원론적으로 다시금 고민해야 할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 한국전쟁 시기 불교계 희생자와 관련된 연구의 토대를 구축하고 활성화하기 위한 한국현대불교사에 대한 포괄적인 연구가 선행되어야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article presents the current status of Buddhist casualties survey during the Korean War based on the “Basic Survey Project on Buddhist Casualties Before and After the Korean War” conducted by the Dongguk Institute for History and Culture Studies with research funding from the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in 2023, and suggests future directions for additional investigation of Buddhist casualties. The project is significant in that it has expanded the scope of Buddhist losses during the Korean War, which had previously been limited to material losses investigations, to include Buddhist casualties for the first time and cataloged them. In the project, a total of 156 Buddhist victims during the Korean War were identified from existing published materials and literature. The project, however, had limitations in that it could only conduct narrow investigations and analyses due to the short investigation period, lack of existing research, and limitations in the data. Therefore, a systematic and extensive survey project on Buddhist casualties during the Korean War should be conducted, such as discovering new materials, conducting field surveys, and securing related testimonies and statements. In addition, it is necessary to fundamentally reconsider the Buddhist casualties surveys, which can secure historical consistency and form social consensus, unlike the some Christians’ current ideological conflict-driven casualties survey during the Korean War. To this end, comprehensive research on the history of modern Korean Buddhism should be conducted in advance to establish and activate the foundation for research on Buddhist casualties during the Korean War.
