      주지주의 문학과 “중용(中庸)” = Intellectualism and “Zhongyong”

      According to Baek Nak-won, “Zhongyong” (中庸) is the primary characteristic of intellectualist literature, whereas Huxley is its representative writer. Choi Jae-seo, a key figure who introduced intellectualist literary theory in the 1930s, also showed considerable interest in Huxley and discussed the issue of Zhongyong in his work. However, this topic has not been thoroughly explored in the existing intellectualist discourse and thus warrants careful examination. This studyexamined how Zhongyong was discussed in the intellectualist literary theories of Baek Nak-won and Choi Jae-seo, considering the meanings they ascribe to it and the differences between them. Just as intellectualist literature existed in Korea,a discourse on intellectual poetics was formed in China, where rich discussions had already taken place regarding the relationship between Zhongyong and intellectual poetics. By exploring how the Chinese discourse on intellectual poeticsexplains Zhongyong, this study aimed to offer a new perspective on interpreting its meaning in Korean intellectualist discourse. Baek Nak-won and Choi Jae-seo explained Zhongyong in terms of compromise and equilibrium. However, theChinese discourse on intellectual poetics recognizes Zhongyong as a harmony of heterogeneous elements, aligning with S. T. Coleridge’s concept of imagination. This insight is expected to serve as an important reference for a new understanding of Zhongyong and intellectualism.
