최인훈의 <광장(廣場)> 연구

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to apply Merleau-Ponty`s Phenomenology to clarify the existential meaning of Choi In-hun`s Gwangjang. Gwangjang`s ambivalent narrative perspective give a balanced expression of the suppressive ideologies of the North and South Koreas and the trend of loss in which existence is denied and abstracted in social systems. In Gwangjang, the character of Lee Myeong-jun loses the ``embodiment-network`` in both North and South Korea and experiences the abstraction of one-way, non-communicative ideologies. He eventually realizes that the ideologies of North and South Koreas are identical in that they suppress existence. However, Lee Myeong-jun shows that his damaged life can be restored through the truth of ``embodiment-love.`` The truth behind Gwangjang is that love can communicate to closed or isolated relationships and can open up the possibility for us to live interactive and subjective lives. The problem awaiting solution of this study is to compare the texts of the first draft of Gwangjang to its rewritten versions to clarify their similarities and differences and to explore the true value of Gwangjang as a piece of literature.
