The creation of Typical Characters and the Writer's World-view
-A Consideration of T'akryu and T'aep'yong ch'onha
This paper proposes to evaluate the novels T'akryu and T'aep'yong ch'onha from the standpoint of 'realism'. The first chapter expounds this basic position and introuduces some central concepts to be utilized in the present study, such as 'balance', 'typicality' and 'intellectual physiognomy' in characterization.'
Chapter 2 tries to focus on the importance of creating typical characters. It discusses how the 'typical' differs from the 'average' in this particular context.
In chapter 3, two novels by Ch'ae Man-shik are focussed on to show to what extent the author succeeded in achieving typicality: Choˇng Chusa in T' akryu and Yun chikwon in T'aep'yong ch'onha. The former is an instance of successful characterization but not a main character in the novel. The latter is both a main character and an extremely interesting one, but the novel itself is of a somewhat limited both in scope and in its almost exclusively satirical point of view.
The fourth chapter concludes that the creation of typical characters is intimately related to the author's world-view, and that the 'intellectual physiognomy' is important in a successful rendering of a mature world-view. Such a world-view also implies a certain historical perspective, a vision of where we are moving toward(terminus ad quem).
