In this article, through the features of the fence and the wall of the Korean traditional house, understanding of outside world is considered. The result of this study shows that the house of Yangban - an aristocrat and the house of a commoner have the fences and walls which have different features. The feature of the house of Yangban is closure. The house is cut off the outside by high walls and strong doors. Hangrangchae is put at the front of the house, protecting the inside of the house. The house has the wall which separates a master’s dwelling from servants’ dwelling. There is the wall which tells man’s space from woman’s space. These separations are influenced by Confucianism, the basis of Yangban’s values. That is, Confucian values are reflected in the structure of the traditional house..Relatively, the walls and fences of a commoner’s house is low and shabby. The Korean traditional house which is essential and important to life is left open to the outside world. This is possible because Koreans regard their neighbors as friendly and homogeneous, not as hostile. The tradition that people lived in the same area, farmed together, helped each other formed this positive understanding. Yangban and commoners build their housing differently based on their different values- Confucian values and positive understanding of their neighbors. And the features of the living spaces have affected next generations through people’s lives.
