Identifying key competencies that lead to successful job performance is one of the important tasks sport managers have as it is highly associated with the overall performance of the organization. The purposes of the current study were to introduce behavioral event interview as a research method for identifying competencies in sport organizations and to determine key competencies needed for becoming successful athletic directors at the NCAA Division III level. Data were collected from 15 superior athletic directors and 10 average athletic directors using behavioral event interview technique. The results showed that the superior athletic directors showed much higher level of competencies in achievement orientation, interpersonal understanding, impact and influence, developing others, team leadership, and analytic thinking than the average athletic directors. Those identified competencies can be used in selection, performance appraisal, career development, succession plan, and training in sport organizations.
