학교 영어와 사교육 영어에 대한 초등학생들의 인식 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 초등학생들의 학교 영어와 사교육 영어에 대해 인식이 어떠한지를 그들의 관점에서 살펴보고자 하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 초등학교 5학년 학생 8명을 연구 참여자로 하여 심층면담을 진행하고 이를 분석하였다. 기본적인 연구 물음은 학교 영어와 사교육 영어의 교육환경과 학습경험, 그리고 이를 토대로 형성된 초등학생들의 인식이다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교 영어와 사교육 영어의 교육 환경에서 가장 큰 차이는 수업하는 시간의 양과 학생 수, 다양한 수업 도구의 사용 여부이다. 둘째, 학교 영어와 사교육 영어의 학습 경험에서의 차이는 학교 영어는 회화를 중심으로 한 말하기 위주이며 사교육 영어는 문법이나 독해가 중심을 이룬다는 것이다. 이러한 교육 환경과 학습 경험의 차이를 토대로 초등학생들이 지닌 학교 영어에 대한 전반적인 인식은 산만하지만 재미있는 수업이라는 것이며 사교육 영어는 집중은 잘 되지만 재미는 없는 수업으로 인식되고 있다. 초등학생들에게 학교 영어는 재미와 흥미 제공이라는 의미를 지니며 사교육 영어는 영어공부와 실력 쌓기의 의미를 생성하면서 학교 영어와 사교육 영어가 초등학생들에게는 상호 보완적 필요 관계를 형성하고 있는 것으로 나타난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present study investigated elementary students’ English learning experiences in school and in private institutes. The study aimed to explore what the students thought about their learning while taking classes in school and private institutes as well as the students’ perceptions of how these experiences influenced their English learning. The research questions that guided data collection were: 1) What are the English learning environments in school and private institutes? 2) How do the students perceive learning experiences in school and private institutes? and 3) What are the students’ perceptions towards their English classes in school and private institutes? The following points summarize the findings from the interviews with the eight elementary students. First, in terms of learning environment, the amount of time in learning and the number of students in class differed in school and in private institutes. Second, speaking was a main learning activity in school, whereas grammar and reading were focused on in private institutes. Third, the students perceived that English class in school was fun and enjoyable. However, they perceived that learning English in private institutes helped them to improve their English abilities compared to learning English in school.
