디지털 네트워크 시대의 초국가적 온라인 팬덤 = 2PM 팬포럼 Wild2Day 회원 인터뷰의 근거이론적 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 전세계적으로 확산되어 온 K-pop의 초국가적 온라인 팬덤 형성 과정과 의미를 근거이론을 활용하여 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 K-pop 아이돌 그룹 중 하나인 2PM의 초국가적 온라인 팬포럼인 Wild2Day의 스태프와 회원 중 61명을 대상으로 온라인 인터뷰를 실시하고, 이들이 제공하는 자료를 개방코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩의 단계를 거쳐 분석하였다. 연구결과, 초국가적 온라인 팬덤을 구성하는 다양한 지역의 팬들은 오프라인을 통한 소개, 온라인상의 우연적 검색, 혹은 기존 관심 분야의 확장 선상에서 팬이 되었으며, 자신이 선택한 그룹에 대해 적극적으로 정보를 추구하고, 이들과 함께 ‘놀고 성장하며’ 즐거움을 얻고 동시에 이들을 지켜주는 역할을 자처한다. 이러한 중심활동에는 팬 자신이 가지고 있는 문화적 맥락과 스타와 팬의 관계에 대한 의미가 맥락/중재 조건으로 작용하지만, 초국가적 팬포럼의 회원들은 궁극적으로 이러한 활동을 통해 개인적/심리적 만족과 더불어 문화적 다양성에 대한 열린 태도를 갖게 되고, 문화적 다양성에 스스로 기여하고 있다는 자부심을 형성해 나가고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 특성은 아이돌 스타에 대한 기존의 국내 팬덤이나 드라마와 영화 팬덤 등 다른 장르의 팬덤과는 매우 다른 문화적 의미로 해석될 수 있어, 변화하는 팬덤에 대한 지속적이고 깊이 있는 이해를 바탕으로 한류의 방향과 내용을 재점검해야 함을 시사하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research attempts to analyze the process and significance of transnational online fandom of K-pop, now expanding its influence throughout the world. For this purpose, this research conducted online interviews with 61 staffs and members of Wild2Day, a transnational online fan forum of one of the K-pop idol groups, 2PM. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the qualitative data gathered for this research through the steps of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Fans, originating from diverse regions with diverse cultural backgrounds, became the members of the transnational online fandom through off-line introduction, on-line random search, or expansion of other interest areas, actively search information on their favorite stars, achieve happiness by ‘playing and growing up’ together with their stars, and, at the same time, volunteer for the role of protecting them. For these central activities, the cultural context of individual fans and the meaning of the relationship between the stars and the fans function as the context/mediating condition. However, eventually the interview results demonstrated that the fans develop openness in their attitude towards cultural diversity in addition to personal/psychological satisfaction and take pride in contributing to cultural diversity through their fandom activities. These results indicate that the transnational online fandom of K-pop need to be understood in a very different way in terms of cultural significance from the domestic fandom for idol stars or fandom of other genres such as drama series. Therefore, it is essential to reconsider the direction and content of Hallyu based on the in-depth understanding of the changing patterns and significance of fandom.
