B.T.(Body temperature) can be changed by the prolonged surgery under general anesthesia, inevitable body exposure of a patient, inhibition of B.T. control function from the use of anesthesia agent and adjuvant or conditions when operating. This study was implemented to provide a helpful basic data for nursing intervention by observing the pattern of a adult patient during the operation and recovery under general anesthesia, and exploring the proper time and method for B.T. maintenance.
The method was to measure the lower 1/3 of esophagus every 15 minutes from the induction of anesthesia with Datascope 2100 during the minutes from the time of arrival in the recovery room
The results were summarized as follows :
1. In the operating room(O.R), 0.3℃ of B.T. decrease in population was observed after 60 minutes from induction of anesthesia
In the recovery room(B.R), 0.5℃ of B.T. increase in population was observed after 30 minutes for the arrival.
2. Change of B.T. by sex :
In the O.R., the B.T. of female was 0.2℃ lower than that of male after 60 minutes from the induction. In the R.R., the B.T. of female of was 0.2℃ higher than that of male after 30 minutes from the arrival.
3. Change of B.T. by type of surgery :
In the O.R., the B.T. of non-laparatomy group was 0.28℃ lower than that of non-laparatomy group after 60 minutes from the induction.
In the R.R., the B.T. of non-laparatomy group was 0.34℃ higher than that of laparatomy group after 30 minutes from the arrival.
4. Change of B.T. by using warm pad :
In the O.R., the B.T. of warm pad non-using group was 0.11℃ lower than that of using group after 60 minutes from the induction.
In the R.R., the B.T. of warm pad non-using group was 0.13℃ higher than that of using group after 30 minutes from the arrival.
5. Change of B.T. by Transfusion :
In the O.R., the B.T. of transfusion group was 0.07℃ lower than that of non-transfusion group after 60 minutes from the induction.
In the R.R., the B.T. of transfusion group of was 0.02℃ lower than that of non-transfusion group after 30 minutes from the arrival.
From the above results, it is advised to prevent body exposure of patient as much as possible immediately from the induction, to use nonvolatile agent such as Betadine, and to consume the time as less as possible during drapping.
Also, 1 propose that all along after 15 minutes from the induction, when the B.T. of patient starts to decrease, the nurse should was warm blanket, warm pad or electric blanket and blood warmer during the transfusion or prolonged surgery.
The nurse should make an effort to maintain the B.T. of patients by covering then with clothes properly until they are moved to the recovery room because the B.T. of patients is decreased by the body exposure due to removing drapping form then the time of completion of operation to the time of arrival in recovery room.
Thus active nursing intervention of protection from the hypothermia, is thought to be needed by using the warm blanket, warm and moisturized oxygen mask, and maintaining high temperature and humidity of the recovery room according to the nursing condition of the B.T. of a patient during surgery and recovery.
