발굴 소설, 이호철의 상해임시정부 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 이호철의 작가의식을 제대로 규명하기 위해서는 우선 소실된 작품의 발굴과 이를 통한 재구가 우선되어야 한다는 목적에서 출발하였다. 필자가 발굴한 상해임시정부은 1967년에 연재 발표된 작품으로 실향민의 애환이나 분단에 대한 진지한 탐구보다는 객관 현실의 변화를 준거로 삼아 식민지 역사 문제가 중점적으로 다루어졌다. 1960년대에는 한일협정 문제로 우리 사회가 크게 들끓어 올랐던 시기로, 학생들의 한일협정 반대운동과 함께 식민지 역사 청산 문제가 수면 위로 올라온 계기가 되었다. 그간 연보에서 누락되었던 이호철의 상해임시정부은 이러한 문화적 요인을 반영하고 있었다.
당시 박정희 군사정권은 이 문제를 다루는 과정에서 반공논리와 경제논리를 앞세워 이를 일방적으로 처리함으로써, 결과적으로 개별 주체의 식민지 경험과 그 기억을 억압하게 된다. 이 소설이 발표된 1960년대 후반은 군사 정권의 반공주의가 전일적으로 내면화되는 시기였다. 그러한 상황에서 반공규율권력은 모든 매체들의 자발적 검열 수단이 되었고, 문인들 또한 반공주의와 관련된 자기검열의 문제에서 누구도 자유롭지 못했다. 장편 상해임시정부는 이와 같이 표현의 자유가 위축되어가던 반공의 시대에서 두 세대 전 우리의 독립 운동사를 다시 더듬어 보고, 그 속에서 당대의 역사적·현실적 분위기를 재현하고자 한 작품이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 특히 한국독립운동사에 있어 상해시대(1919-1932)에 활동했던 많은 명망가들의 경력과 활동 및 분열상을 조명하는 과정에서 역사에 대한 호기심을 촉구시키고, 과거에서 현재에 이르는 역사의 지향점을 탐구하게 해준다는 사실 하나로도 이 작품은 충분한 의의를 획득한다고 하겠다.
