여성학 강좌에 대한 수강생들의 인식과 반응 = A study on students' perceptions and reactions to women's studies class

This study is investigation of the students' perceptions and reactions who took the women's studies classes. One generation has been passed since feminism was introduced in Korea and women's studies courses have been spread in the universitys. But recently, there are claims of useless of women's studies courses, which is insisting that the courses bring reverse discrimination. So the purpose of this study is to find out the meaning of women's studies courses through the research of what is the student's goal and motivation to participate in the course and what is the change after they took the course.
Students take the courses for several reason, some students attend the classes to handle with experience of sex discrimination and want to know how to express their voice to cope with the repression. Sometimes, senior or student who already took the class introduce to other student to take the course.
Many students attending the classes thought that feminism is exclusive insist that claim only women's right and interest before learn what is women's studies courses. However, while participating in the class, they can resolve a misunderstanding for this study and even get perspective for various forms of discrimination, not only sex discrimination. Feminism has brought a lot of changes to Korea society but, still the status of women in Korea is very low compared to OECD countries' position of women. In this respect and considering the changes of students who studied this course, the women's studies as a college course still need to be meaningful.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 여성학을 수강하고 있는 학생들의 인식과 반응에 대해 조사한 것이다. 한국 사회에 페미니즘이 소개되고, 여성학 강좌가 대학 내에 퍼져나간 지 한 세대가 지났다. 그동안 여성학은 우리 사회의 뿌리 깊은 성차별적 문화를 환기시키며 변화를 만들어왔다. 그런데 최근 역차별을 주장하며 여성학 강좌의 무용론을 주장하는 의견들이 나타나고 있다. 이러한 때 여성학 강좌에 참여하는 학생들이 강좌를 수강하는 목적은 무엇이고, 어떤 동기로 참여하게 되었으며, 수업을 통해 얻은 변화는 무엇인지 등에 대해 살펴봄으로써 여성학 수업의 의의를 검토해보고자 한다.
학생들이 여성학 수업을 듣는 이유는 성차별을 경험하고 그에 대응하기 위해, 억압에 대처할 수 있는 언어를 갖기 위해, 선배나 먼저 수강한 사람들의 권유 등과 같이 다양한 이유로 수업에 참여한다. 수업에 참여하기 전 많은 학생들이 페미니즘이 여성만의 권리와 이익만을 배타적으로 주장하는 이념으로 오해 하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그러나 실제 수업에 참여하면서 페미니즘에 대한 오해에서 벗어나며, 더 나아가 성차별을 비롯한 다양한 형태의 차별에 대한 감수성을 키우게 되는 것으로 나타난다. 페미니즘이 한국 사회에 확산되면서 성차별을 해소하고 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 그러나 OECD국가들과 비교할 때 한국 여성의 지위는 여전히 매우 낮은 수준을 보인다. 이러한 측면과 학생들의 변화를 고려할 때 여성학 무용론은 섣부른 판단이라고 할 수 있으며, 여성학은 여전히 대학 강좌로써 의미와 필요성이 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
